I received a chunky wedge shaped block of marble from a friend who is a landscape gardener. He was working on the site of a disused monumental sculptor’s yard, near Drogheda in County Louth. He unearthed a small collection of assorted, discarded stone. The marble was the base of a headstone on which a cross had, at one time been attached but had broken off. The date 1885 was found on the base so it is very likely Italian marble. I cut the block into a series of smaller pieces. This figure is sculpted from one of them.
