While working on a conservation project on an old church in County Laois, I managed to salvage a small block of limestone from which I carved this figure. It was a small cornerstone measuring roughly 20 x 14 x 16 cm. Along the base of the piece I left the chisel marks on the two faces of the stone which would have been visible. Underneath the base there are still traces of the lime mortar used in the building.
The squat, blocky nature of the stone was ideal for this small crouching figure.
